Week Three Blog

This week we were introduced to Sylvia Plath. During class, we got to learn a little bit about Plath and her life. We also read a couple of her most popular poems. Our class annotated and learned more about the style Plath uses. We were then able to write in the style Plath uses in her poems. The style Plath uses makes each image really stand out. This style gives the reader the ability to relate and fully understand what the poet is writing about. While reading her poems, I found myself getting goose bumps and I was almost picturing more of her life than what was written in the poem. Her poems made me think outside of the actual poem. This type of theme is really interesting and gives the reader the ability to be able to tell the difference between concrete and abstract words.
This week we also were assigned our first reading of The Plath Cabinet. I really enjoyed the poems I read. Catherine Bowman uses a lot of repetition, which really brings out emotion and meaning. I have noticed that Bowman literally writes about anything in her poems. The reader is able to somewhat see Plath through the use of Bowman’s poems.
The readings this week seem to be a little more complex. Bowman’s poems require more thinking, because they are a bit confusing, but I am enjoying reading poems from a different poet. Our assignment was to choose a poem and annotate it, then to write in the style of that poem.
