Blog Entry #4

This week, we began to learn about Sylvia Plath. We read her biography and a few poems about her. We got into groups and shared a poem we wrote with a beginning line of one of Plath's poems. Then discussed the importance of the first line has on the rest of the poem. We began to watch a biography on Plath.
I find Plath's poem very amusing; I can not say I seen this form of poetry before. The comparisons, the distortion of reality, it is like being in the mind of Plath. Yet I find it a bit of a challenge to imitate her. Her uniqueness and her style raised the bar, forcing myself to go beyond my current level of creativity. I have finished annotating one of Plath's poems and just polishing up a poem that we are to imitate her style. I can not wait to learn more about Plath next class.
I have learned from reading Plath's poems and her biography, and from personal experience that some of the best poems can be created when we integrate ourself on to it. Releasing all raw, unfiltered emotions and experiences from the past on to paper. Yet we do not need to be depressed or ecstatic to unveil such power from words, but it might help if you feel what you want to say. The burst of emotion will wield influence over you. Once it is gone, revising and adjustments can be made. Just another artistic discipline I have noticed.
