This week our class had Monday off because of Labor Day. When we did meet on Wednesday our poems where due with the poem that we picked from poets.org. I was not in the class yet when we were told that we had to "pick apart" the poem we read. When we arrived at class we were numered and told to get in our group to read our poems. We later learned about absract words and concrete words, and listened to a poem with both. After we wrote a poem about an abstract word, using only concrete words. I wrote my poem on jealousy, starting it off talking about the "little green monster."
On Wednesday when we got into groups I discovered that I enjoy hearing my peers poetry, along with reading mine to others. It gives us, as students, the opportunity to grow as writters by giving and recieving constructive critisism. This also helps us to see others creativity and be able to learn new ways of writting our own poems. I am currently working on the "Blue's Poem" assignment, and I have discovered that writting this poem is not as easy as it seems, having to meet the critera is difficult. I have tried to write a poem or two but I was not around a pencil and paper, so these poems are lost. It has been difficult to write the poem with 12 beats per line, so I will not write my final poem using that particular critera and instead I will write three line stanzas with the second line that same as the first with some variation, and the third line ryming with the first.
I feel like I must be "inspired" to write a poem, which is why most of my poems are written in my head, when they "just come to be." This would be fine, if I had a pencil and paper with me 24/7, but this is just not practical. I do try to do my best by turning on music, or reading anothers poem to let insperation hit me. I have also learned that writting poetry is more than simply becoming inspired, it is a disciplan to write in different ways, and the different critera.
