Week One

In the first week of class we discussed how poetry is it’s own language and all the many ways it can be written. We also went over the power of one word and what it means in the poem. In chapter 2 we learned about the music in a poem and different kinds of rhyming and ways to rhyme in a poem. We have also done some poetry writing in the styles of different poets.

To be honest, poetry has never been a keen interest of mine, but I’ve actually enjoyed writing poems and it has also felt nice to kind of express my feelings in a different way that I am not used to which also challenges me. It is also nice to be able to write about what we want unlike a typical English class. Some troubles I face are definitely the breaking down the poem and finding the music. I also find that finding the stressed syllables are not a talent of mine either. I am hoping we can work more on breaking down the poem.

I have learned this week how much writing such as poetry is present in our culture and how important it is. I also learned how much poetry and music correlate in terms of the way words are used and sound, I know I couldn’t go a day without listening to music and it is really cool how much music and poetry have in common. It was also interesting to learn about how punctuation or not punctuating cause pauses in the poems.
