The readings that we were to read were MYOD selections. We were also to right a poem in the style of a selected poem in the anthology of poems. I read through each one and realized very swiftly that none of the poems were in a style that was going to make it easy for me to imitate. A lot of the poetry had personifications and comparisons, including the poem I selected, Le Monocle de Mon Oncle by Wallace Stevens.
By far the most difficult of all was interpreting what the poet was trying to say in the poem. Once it was figured out exactly the idea that was being portrayed, the second most challenging part was getting my poem to come across in a similar way. Let's put it out there, I doubt I'll be getting published in the near future. When trying to imitate a poets style I sort of have qualms with it. For me to try to do poetry similar to the style of a poet that has an apparent originality to it, doesn't seem like I'm stealing that style? Maybe I'm just over thinking it.
