week 1

Our first homework assignment for English A 190 was to write a dictionary entry on a word from a poem. We were to find the connotation and denotation of said word and include the context in which the word was used. Our second homework assignment was to go to a particular website and find a poem we liked. With this poem we were to suppose write our own imitating their style.

When I read the first chapter of “Making Your Own Days,” my first thoughts were basically “what is going on”. I have no knowledge of poetry and I have never written a poem and so I was confused as to how I was going to be able to bring out the inner poet. When we were assigned our first poetry assignment, I felt a little overwhelmed because whenever someone read their work it was really good. I was a little nervous so to speak, but when I started to write my first poem I actually liked it. It was enjoyable but when I am at a loss for words it’s really hard because I get frustrated.

When it comes to the artistic process I am learning that in order for it to completely work that one has to be opened. You have to be ready to tap into your creative person and pull out all of your creative resources. I have learned that personally for me that I have to let everything else go and not really think about too much in order for me to come up with a poem that I feel is even remotely cool enough to present to my teacher. I also learned that it’s better if I get some advice from my peers in order to get better input and constructive criticism.
