The readings this week has mostly involved reading MYOD to better improve our writing skills in poetry. We read part 1 chapter 3 and also pages 226-249. These readings have delved deeply into different aspects of writing poetry such as using enjambment, anaphora, personification and synesthesia. These skills that I have learned have greatly improved my writings in poetry.
What has been the most challenging this week is probably applying all of the skills I have learned into my own writing. It is difficult to pay attention to writing personification and anaphora and synesthesia. It takes much more focus and concentration and that was definitely a challenge this week. I have really enjoyed the challenge even though it was difficult at times. It was also very interesting to learn how to properly annotate a poem. It was very fun to analyze and rip apart a poem. Annotating a poem, surprisingly, helped me understand its meaning.
Inspiration is probably what I learned the most this week in class. It was also the most fun part of this week’s assignments as well. In class and when we read MYOD there are so many examples given of different poems and poets, famous and new, writing different styles of poetry and it is so interesting to learn about them. The best part is imitating their styles to write poems of our own. This is probably my favorite part of the class thus far. It is fascinating to take your own ideas and inspiration and incorporate a specific style to demonstrate it. The process can be challenging at times but always rewarding in the end.
