This week’s readings centered completely on flash fiction. We read three stories from the Indiana Review that was short fiction and another out of MYOD. We also did a few in-class exercises to demonstrate what flash fiction is and how it works. We also had to read a few articles for homework concerning flash fiction. Overall we were introduced to the idea and have just started experimenting with it ourselves.
I, personally, have immensely enjoyed this new subject of flash fiction. In many ways it reminds me of poetry in that it is usually about a specific moment, feeling, thought etc. It is a type of anecdote at times or a quick snapshot of a moment and I really have learned how much I enjoy these types of poetry or fiction. It is extremely challenging to write flash fiction. It has taught me to narrow down what I want to say and get my point across in as few amounts of words as I can. I usually over write.
I think, with this subject of flash fiction, the one aspect I am having the most difficulty with is my creativity. It is much harder for me to be creative and come up with an idea or story to write as my short. I could be thinking too hard but when it comes to flash fiction, it almost is as if the sky is the limit. The same could easily be said about poetry, but I have had so much experience with poetry that I know how to access my creative outlet in that subject. Flash fiction is so new that it is harder for me to channel my creativity to a good use. That is the one part that is the most challenging for me.
