Week Seven Blog Entry

The readings for this week have all consisted of flash fiction. We have had readings online in resources as well as in the Indiana Review. We have read stories such as “When They Spoke” and “You’re Going to Miss Me When I’m Gone.” We have also done a few things in class such as make our own inkblot and write a flash fiction story about the images we found in the ink. We also got into groups and analyzed and came up with our own flash fiction.

The one idea that I am focusing on this week due to what we have learned in class and the stories we have read is the idea of keeping your flash fiction extremely interesting. This is generally a challenge, especially to keep cliché’s and average language out of my stories. Overall, I have immensely enjoyed learning about Flash Fiction and how to write it. It has proven a challenge but it is really fun to do. Right now I am trying to write my own flash fiction stories on my own to try and challenge myself. I would definitely like to keep working on my skills in flash fiction.

I have to address creativity when doing flash fiction. After reading so many different types of flash fiction I noticed that the sky is the limit when writing flash fiction. The story of the knife in the drawer, “You’re Going to Miss Me When I’m Gone,” and “When They Spoke,” really opened my eyes to being very creative when writing flash fiction and I have to say that this is one of the most fun and challenging parts of writing short shorts. Seeing the great creativity in so many other writer’s short shorts makes me want to be just as creative and to think outside of the box. Their writings are definitely the inspiration for me when working on my own flash fiction.
